DIY Loose Powder Makeup
Did you know your skin is your largest and most exposed organ?
That means we need to be mindful about what we eat AND what we put on our skin. If you wouldn't eat it, think twice before you slather it on!
The cosmetic industry makes a killing every year selling us dangerous, chemical-laden products that cost a pretty-penny. No thanks. They can keep their expensive, toxic sludge!
What if you could make your own personal care products at home?
And what if they cost only a few cents to make and worked better than the stuff from the store?? I've been making a few of my own products for the past few years including deodorant, face wash, dry shampoo, and this loose powder.
I've never been a liquid foundation kind of girl. My skin just doesn't like it. But I've always worn a loose powder to soak up the shine and give my skin a more even, finished look. I've searched high and low for a more natural powder option, but they were either too expensive, didn't work with my skin, or still had lingering icky ingredients like bismuth oxychloride.
Imagine my joy when I discovered how easy it was to make my own! It has staying power, soaks up shine perfectly, is translucent enough to work with many skin tones, and has only two common kitchen ingredients...arrowroot (or cornstarch) and cocoa powder! You can also easily use it as a finishing powder over foundation.
I know I know...you probably think I'm crazy for suggesting you put chocolate on your face! A friend once asked me if it would turn into chocolate milk if she cried! I can't say I've had that happen yet, but it's a fun thought! And no, you won't smell like chocolate...unless you want to...and then, yes, you definitely will! ;)
Lastly, I love that when I run out of this stuff, I just run to the kitchen and whip up some more!
Here's how you do it:
DIY Loose Powder Makeup
Ingredients
• Arrowroot powder (or organic cornstarch)
• Cocoa powder (high quality, preferably organic and fair trade)
Directions
1. Start with a small amount of arrowroot powder (let's say 1/4 cup) and slowly add the cocoa powder a little bit at a time, completely mixing it each time.
2. Keep doing this until you find a match for your skin tone. I test it on the back of my hand or my face as I go along. (It's pretty translucent, so even if it doesn't seem like it will match perfectly, it might work well once it's on your skin...so keep trying it out!)
3. Once I've found a match, I sift the ingredients together and pour them into an old loose powder container.
4. That's it! Use as your base or finishing powder as you normally would!
This stuff gives new meaning to "food on your face!" It may not be the most advanced, long-wearing, wrinkle-smoothing option out there, but I think it does the job and I feel good about what I'm putting on my skin!
Let me know if you try it!
